Nnedi Okorafor Book Review- Kabu-Kabu

Kabu- Kabu written by Nnedi Okorafor is a collection of twenty-one amazing short stories.

First, you must understand the lingo "Kabu kabu" is a term largely used by Nigerians to refer to unregistered vehicles or taxis.

Boarding a Kabu- Kabu in Nigeria is a huge risk because a number of things can happen from that ride. People, however, hail these vehicles because it is usually a very quick means of taking you wherever you need to be in record time.
Instead of waiting and scuttling for a vehicle at the bus stop most people rely on kabu- kabu despite the widespread stories about the dangers.

The eponymous story in the book largely points at the thrill and horror that comes with Kabu- Kabu. Ngozi is in a haste to get to the airport so that she can attend her sisters' wedding in Nigeria. In her frustration, she hails this unregistered vehicle. And it is all weird but Ngozi is determined to be at the airport.

From this ride, Ngozi travelled through places she had never been to and met face to face with terrifying co-riders as it is often the case with this kabu- kabu.

Besides Kabu-Kabu, the book had an array of very interesting stories. I was learning a lot about a culture, self- identity among other themes while I read this book. It was my first time reading a book by Nnedi and I love how I was shifting to know what happens next with every story. There are science- fiction stories, fantasy and even horror all in one book. Each
story planted something in me so I can't really pick a favourite. However,  If I must, I will choose Asunder and The Palm Wine Bandit

Asunder was a refreshing love story for me whilst The Palm wine bandit pointed out absurd traditions and how Women are constantly told what they can and cannot do completely ignoring something very important which is "Choice".

There was a good spread of heroines in this book and while I read I said to myself If I have a daughter she I will introduce this book to her.

I Would recommend this book to anyone who is open to new narratives.  Kabu-Kabu was largely a breath of fresh air for me. Even when some of the stories kept me up at night because images from one of the stories titled - On The Road kept coming to me lol.

Books To Read In Your Free Time

With a Pandemic before us and the constant advise to wash our hands, social distancing, quarantine. I feel like the best buddy these times is really a book. Not just any book! A good book.  So I recommend the following books knowing that you should like it because they are really good. 1.  Pride And Prejudice by Jane Austen   Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is set in a different time so you get to escape from the happenings around you and find solace in a different time. Like a handy time machine. And it is also about love so how about that?   2.  A Religious Book. As we try to just stay calm and far away from others as much as we can. If you are religious like me, you may cling to the Bible, the Quran, according to your faith. This I know is very rewarding. Like a personal counsellor.  3. Born A Crime by Trevor Noah.  Details the childhood of Trevor Noah. Really fun and i...

The Secret Lives Of The Four Wives by Lola Shoneyin-Book Review

Book Review Time!!  As humanity battles with COVID-19 and the thought of staying indoors have become a chore for so many people, I have solidly relied on books to alleviate boredom. Not just any book but books filled with so many "wow" moments. I am just saying I need a sweet escape during this pandemic and books like - The Secret Lives of The Four Wives by Lola Shoneyin has been a good companion. If you are in need of a book you can't put down even for a toilet break, then you should pick up The Secret Lives of the Four Wives because it is filled with intrigue and loads of drama.  The book is basically about a man, his four wives, and a secret that is bound to make you say WHAT!!   Most books I read growing up bordered on childlessness, polygamy, and how women are perceived in society. However, this book is laden with so many themes which makes it wholesome. Themes such as Self-discovery, Forgiveness, Womanhood amongst others fitted perfectly in th...

The People

I know a place filled with a carefree lot. The citizens love living life fast and on the edge. Lord knows how hard they dance on the edge despite knowing that the rock might tilt and they end up at the bottom of the hill. Another thing these people love besides living fast and loud is Hope. One would not blame them because hope seemed to be the only constant thing in their lives. Hope was always there. They could be in a vehicle that is about to explode and their general thought would be;  I know this vehicle is about to go up in flames and we will all die but I, however, HOPE!! it does not happen before I get to my destination.  They make all sorts of wild decisions;   Let us build our houses close to oil fields. And in times of an explosion, we grieve and continue living there anyway.  What happens when a pandemic occurs? They fold their arms and hope somehow it will just go away.  And with a government that does not put the ci...
