Women In Film Awards 2019 brought about a full display of powerful and talented Women in the film business. An example of such a woman is the very talented writer, producer, director-actress Issa Rae who emerged as the winner of Women In Film- Emerging Entrepreneur Award.

Besides the glamorous fashion statements, acceptance speeches are what we look out for during award shows.
We have still not gotten over Issa speaking her truth when she said without batting an eyelid during the 2017 Emmy Awards red carpet that she was, "rooting for everyone black". Yet again,  Issa did not come to smile and be modest about her achievement during Women In Film Awards. She was real and cocky and we loved every bit of it. I personally would not stop smiling and screaming " Yass!!!" to my phone screen as I watched her acceptance speech on Instagram.

Issa started her speech by pointing out that Women are raised to remain humble, which is the absolute truth. Issa literally voiced out what we say deep within ourselves when we look at how far we have come in achieving our goals.
Her speech is pretty much summed up in my head with an adage amongst Nigerians which is explained thus; When the Agama lizard jumps from the rooftop and lands on the ground, if no one would applaud it, it nods as a way of applauding its effort.

I was so inspired by Issa Rae's outspoken demeanour. Issa is a true Queen who recognizes her queenship and kicked out every form of subtlety in owning her crown. I think every girl can draw strength from her speech because it reminds us to not downplay our achievements. Issa is a wake-up call to all that we need not be modest about our talents.  We should tell anyone “I did that Sh*t myself”. I guess with Issa Rae there is no room to be Insecure.

The Forever Enthusiast; My first blog post 2019

Woke up this morning to my mom singing Dj Khaled's "Wild thoughts" in the bathroom. Not only was it hilarious, it somehow became my motivation to write my first blog post. For a long time, I pushed the idea of having my own blog because of a whole lot of irrelevant excuses. Today, I choose to emulate my "wild thoughts" bathroom singing mother for the rest of 2019. Today I choose to be an enthusiast! My mother is a far cry away from being a good singer but, she sings anyway not minding what anyone might say. A lady willing to learn new things like the latest dance moves. She also never fails to speak the truth. She is one who is never afraid to ask questions and understands that for a problem there is definitely a solution. My mom has the spirit of a hustler which makes her "the forever enthusiast. With this, I say welcome to my blog! And do stick around.

Curiosity

Here is a thought! Why do Nigerians love answers especially when bad things happen?  In the olden days, prior to the colonial masters and even after the colonial masters came to Africa, our forefathers practised divination, poured a libation to the ancestors and tried to find out why certain predicaments befell the people.  They got answers quite alright. With the witches taking the bulk of the blame or it was the god’s way of helping them find their way back and rethink their decisions.  When the people left the way of their fathers after much persuasion from the foreigners. How did the foreigners do this? By demonising the way the people worshipped.   So the people accepted the new religion but it did not stop their curiosity. It only doubled the need for answers. Churches sprang up in all corners.  The advertisement employed by these churches pointed to solutions in a bid to attract the people. So you read Marine ...

Why The Thought Of Grooming My Natural Hair Scares Me

These past months I have been in a dilemma on what to do with my hair. I can't put an age to the first time I relaxed my hair but I have been doing it ever since then. When the wave of embracing the natural state of your hair came, I paid no mind to it. I just felt let's continue doing what we were doing before no need to change.   Recently, my sister resolved to go natural.  I had mixed reactions hearing this. I too had not relaxed my hair in months but I was planning to. But the thought of going natural was both appealing and scary. I watched a bunch of videos and decided to join the texlaxed hair group. But an inkling pointed out that I was not being honest with myself. I like the thought of going natural but! I have this irrational fear that the hair would turn out ugly or I will look unkempt wearing my hair in its natural state.  This irrational fear spans from years of observing and being told that the best hair care is having your hair permed and people...
