Define Genius - An Ode To The Arts

What does Genius mean to you? If you Google the term Genius here is what you will find "exceptional intellectual or creative power or other natural ability"

Growing up in a typical Nigerian environment, those in the arts were not worthy of being called geniuses. And I am convinced that a lot of people still believe that if you are no scientist then one should stick to smaller terms when describing themselves.

When people speak about geniuses to aspire to they never call the names of my favourite musicians. Of course not! They are no genius they just make nice music, nothing special so they are tossed aside. The name of hair stylists, fashionistas never made the list. Of course not! they just made us pretty.

I have grown up and I am redefining what genius means to me. When I say the word genius, the photo of Albert Einstein with his dishevelled grey hair no longer comes to mind. The images that pop in my head after Kanye, of course, are great writers and poets that carve beautiful words that touch the soul. People who preserve humanity in their words. They tell the story of people both living and dead.

That dancer who moves like he or she is not human. Actors that interpret our stories. Men and women who freeze life through their lens. The artist whose painting evokes emotions.

The men and women who have done nothing but proven that there is beauty in the world by existing in their awesomeness that's what genius means to me.

What does genius mean to you? Let me know who defines genius to you in the comment section.

  1. Absolutely true. Genius to me is just being exceptional in the little things you do. Genius doesn't have to belong to just a set of persons or mind, I believe everyone is a genius in at least one way or the other.

Curiosity

Here is a thought! Why do Nigerians love answers especially when bad things happen?  In the olden days, prior to the colonial masters and even after the colonial masters came to Africa, our forefathers practised divination, poured a libation to the ancestors and tried to find out why certain predicaments befell the people.  They got answers quite alright. With the witches taking the bulk of the blame or it was the god’s way of helping them find their way back and rethink their decisions.  When the people left the way of their fathers after much persuasion from the foreigners. How did the foreigners do this? By demonising the way the people worshipped.   So the people accepted the new religion but it did not stop their curiosity. It only doubled the need for answers. Churches sprang up in all corners.  The advertisement employed by these churches pointed to solutions in a bid to attract the people. So you read Marine ...

The Forever Enthusiast; My first blog post 2019

Woke up this morning to my mom singing Dj Khaled's "Wild thoughts" in the bathroom. Not only was it hilarious, it somehow became my motivation to write my first blog post. For a long time, I pushed the idea of having my own blog because of a whole lot of irrelevant excuses. Today, I choose to emulate my "wild thoughts" bathroom singing mother for the rest of 2019. Today I choose to be an enthusiast! My mother is a far cry away from being a good singer but, she sings anyway not minding what anyone might say. A lady willing to learn new things like the latest dance moves. She also never fails to speak the truth. She is one who is never afraid to ask questions and understands that for a problem there is definitely a solution. My mom has the spirit of a hustler which makes her "the forever enthusiast. With this, I say welcome to my blog! And do stick around.

Why The Thought Of Grooming My Natural Hair Scares Me

These past months I have been in a dilemma on what to do with my hair. I can't put an age to the first time I relaxed my hair but I have been doing it ever since then. When the wave of embracing the natural state of your hair came, I paid no mind to it. I just felt let's continue doing what we were doing before no need to change.   Recently, my sister resolved to go natural.  I had mixed reactions hearing this. I too had not relaxed my hair in months but I was planning to. But the thought of going natural was both appealing and scary. I watched a bunch of videos and decided to join the texlaxed hair group. But an inkling pointed out that I was not being honest with myself. I like the thought of going natural but! I have this irrational fear that the hair would turn out ugly or I will look unkempt wearing my hair in its natural state.  This irrational fear spans from years of observing and being told that the best hair care is having your hair permed and people...
