Why Is It Okay That African Accents Are Faked Or Imitated In Movie Roles?

I sat down to see a movie the other day, which I was genuinely enjoying until a character was introduced speaking a god-awful "African" accent. That was not the first time some actor was trying to speak like an African and completely sucked at it. I kept sighing and screaming at my screen whenever the character came on

"We do not sound like that!"

" I could have acted this role for free!"

"We have millions of Africans why not allow them to play these roles?"

On behalf of Africans all over the world, I am here to say we are done! Enough!
Enough with the fake African accents in the movie, television shows. It was never funny. Why? Because we are being misrepresented with these fake accents.

We hear these fake accents on television and be all confused wondering what you mean. How is it possible that an "African" accent manages to confuse the very people an actor is trying to represent?

It is not ok to randomly choose someone that looks African and tell them; Hey! you are going to play Adekunle a Yoruba man in this movie so go learn a Yoruba accent. This is totally unfair because there are actually Africans who can play these roles and the most interesting part about hiring an African to represent his/her people is that just like the Hispanic, Indians, Chinese people you hire in these movies, the African would be a natural and not have to fake an accent.

How is it ok that an African accent should be faked or imitated but other cultures are properly represented?

And no, African accents are not ridiculous and so is our sense of style ( that's a story for another day). The narrative of Africans being and sounding ridiculous have played on for too long to the point that Africans are beginning to fake accents that they have no business with, desperately trying to sound different. Think about it!

  1. It sounds very weird and funny most times. And like you rightly said, it is very possible to get an actual native to play those parts, and would do it quite well.

The Forever Enthusiast; My first blog post 2019

Woke up this morning to my mom singing Dj Khaled's "Wild thoughts" in the bathroom. Not only was it hilarious, it somehow became my motivation to write my first blog post. For a long time, I pushed the idea of having my own blog because of a whole lot of irrelevant excuses. Today, I choose to emulate my "wild thoughts" bathroom singing mother for the rest of 2019. Today I choose to be an enthusiast! My mother is a far cry away from being a good singer but, she sings anyway not minding what anyone might say. A lady willing to learn new things like the latest dance moves. She also never fails to speak the truth. She is one who is never afraid to ask questions and understands that for a problem there is definitely a solution. My mom has the spirit of a hustler which makes her "the forever enthusiast. With this, I say welcome to my blog! And do stick around.

Today.

Today, like I have been doing for the past five years, I woke up as a wife, to a husband who worships the floor I walk on. I knew I was right when I choose him.  I also woke up a mother to two bubbly kids. Very rude pair if I must add. Samson and I are still wondering where we went wrong with those two- Samson and Lucy. Twins. Five years old. We just kept yelling and threatening without change. But still I adore them and they adore me.  On this day like every other day, my routine was pretty much the same. Prepare food for the family or they all starve since I hold the key to their survival. After breakfast I moved on to tackle those kids into the school bus like we do every day, I see Little Samson was becoming more mature but Lucy has resolved to be a brat.  I always blamed Samson for Lucy's attitude and then he blames me back and then we would quarrel. After tossing the children on the school bus, Samson and I would race off to work.  I am a psycholog...

The People

I know a place filled with a carefree lot. The citizens love living life fast and on the edge. Lord knows how hard they dance on the edge despite knowing that the rock might tilt and they end up at the bottom of the hill. Another thing these people love besides living fast and loud is Hope. One would not blame them because hope seemed to be the only constant thing in their lives. Hope was always there. They could be in a vehicle that is about to explode and their general thought would be;  I know this vehicle is about to go up in flames and we will all die but I, however, HOPE!! it does not happen before I get to my destination.  They make all sorts of wild decisions;   Let us build our houses close to oil fields. And in times of an explosion, we grieve and continue living there anyway.  What happens when a pandemic occurs? They fold their arms and hope somehow it will just go away.  And with a government that does not put the ci...
