Lunch Story

Yemi sat in the corner at Mrs Oritse's restaurant eating her lunch half-heartedly while thoughts of work that awaited her return back at the office rented her mind.
It was his laughter that drew her attention as he shook hands with a friend  cheerfully.  Mr Perfect took a sit at a table next to Yemi's. She wanted to cry out "Why so perfect?".

He moved easily, dropping freckles of how perfect he was. When he smiled, Yemi became blindYemi  allowed to see just him but, he did not see her. Not even a glance in her direction he just mindlessly scratched the stubble on his chin while he went through his phone. His nose fitted his face perfectly, his well-sculpted face on his clear light skin looked relaxed like he did not have a care in the world.

Yemi wondered if he was alone and toyed with the idea of joining him at his table and she nervously drummed her hands on the table and wiped sweat lightly from her forehead. "I should go over cooly and join him no harm. Besides, there was no rule that the guy has to make the first move".  Yemi stood up, brushed her black skirt lightly and made a move for his table but Mr Perfect stood up abruptly and rushed over to hug a tall dark skinned lady. This lady breezed in like a tornado and Stole Yemi's bright smile. She was in a  beautiful black dress that sat perfectly on her showing off her feminine features in a classy way. They both took their sits and placed their order.
Yemi took her seat and watched from the corner of her eye how ebony goddess chewed lightly on her salad. Yemi dropped her burger in frustration.

This Man just came in and stole her heart. She heard him laugh lightly at something chocolate goddess said to him.  Mr Perfect watched his tall glass of chocolate like an elated schoolboy.  Yemi continued to watch them trying her very best not to be a creep.

"I love you, " He said to chocolatey and she chuckled lightly while she shoved a forkful of salad into her mouth.
" So I get no reply now?"
Yemi still did not hear any response from chocolaty.

Yemi screamed "I love you! I love you!" In response to his plea for a reply but she knew better than to voice it out.

"Still mad at you"  chocolaty replied and dropped her fork quietly. Yemi turned to see if Mr Perfect was leaving. He was however standing with a shy grin plastered on his face, he reached out and  held her perfect chocolate face between his palms and kissed her gently on her lips. These two must be in heaven. Yemi eyed the duo jealousy, She looked down at her half-eaten burger and sighed heavily. Yemi grabbed her purse at the same time the perfect couple took their leave. Miss chocolaty chuckled at something her Mr Perfect whispered into her ear bothof them smiled  coyly to each other while Yemi rolled her eyes behind them. They descended the stairs talking lightly.

"Ok, what is this? " Chocolaty asked her Mister. Surprise unmistakable in her voice while she looked at the ring her Mister slipped into her finger.

Mr Perfect strolled forward and held his lips together tightly and said;
"I know how much you hate the whole PDA thing. As much as I would love to shout it on the rooftops how much i love and need you. Marry me please" He ended pouting cutely at Miss chocolaty while I watched in awe dabbed with jealousy. Miss chocolaty just nodded yes.

"That's  all? " Yemi spoke in her head. This girl does not deserve this boy. "Do you mind taking a picture of us?" Chocolaty's crisp voice broke into her thoughts. "Sure" Yemi cleared her throat uncomfortably and collected the phone from her.

They were picture perfect. No filter needed as they both looked like everything we always wished for. Their frozen smile held a lot of love and a lot of promise. Yemi said a silent prayer in her heart for the pair. She prayed that they continue to smile as they did right now. Yemi handed back the phone and the trio continued their journey down the stairs.

The trio parted ways at the parking lot while Yemi walked briskly to her car but stopped abruptly to have one last look at the couple. They were a vision to behold. They locked lips while the ray of the sun fell perfectly on them.
Their car led Yemi's car as they drove out of the premises. Immediately the couple's car branched off into the road, a truck from nowhere ran into their vehicle. Yemi froze in her car wide-eyed. She quickly unbuckled her seat belt and alighted her car. Mr perfect went through the windshield. His perfect face, filled with blood and Chocolaty came down from the car shakily muttering to herself, Blood oozing down from a cut on her forehead. Yemi just stood in shock. Everything happened so fast her head was spinning. Calls for help rang out in the air when Chocolaty slumped in one of the onlooker’s arms.

Later that evening when Yemi returned home, she fell heavily on her couch. Still shaken from the event that unfolded before her during her lunch break.

"Why did they have to die" Yemi broke into tears. She fell to her knees weeping bitterly. Yemi never got to know the names of the couple but they held a special place in her heart. To Yemi, they were her Mister Perfect and Chocolaty and she did not have plans of ever forgetting them.

Curiosity

Here is a thought! Why do Nigerians love answers especially when bad things happen?  In the olden days, prior to the colonial masters and even after the colonial masters came to Africa, our forefathers practised divination, poured a libation to the ancestors and tried to find out why certain predicaments befell the people.  They got answers quite alright. With the witches taking the bulk of the blame or it was the god’s way of helping them find their way back and rethink their decisions.  When the people left the way of their fathers after much persuasion from the foreigners. How did the foreigners do this? By demonising the way the people worshipped.   So the people accepted the new religion but it did not stop their curiosity. It only doubled the need for answers. Churches sprang up in all corners.  The advertisement employed by these churches pointed to solutions in a bid to attract the people. So you read Marine ...

My Mother Is....

Putting together the perfect Mother’s Day message is never easy. This year, I kept staring at the blank sheet and all I could think of was how flawed my mother really is.  On days like this, people really just like to highlight how much of superhero mothers are. However, even though my mother loves attention so much. She is just another human.  A  human who makes mistakes. Capable of forgetting to put down the food from the fire, Coiling up and falling asleep on the couch, biting her fingernails, Irrational and impulsive at times, grumpy and sometimes lose her temper.  My mother some days appear from her room looking like a fashion killer and somedays she just walks out of her room wearing a rumpled shirt and we have to persuade, beg and pacify her to go change.  She's got a sharp tongue that could draw tears from your eyes and can set the entire house on fire. When the ball of drama starts to roll no one can escape it.   Miracl...

Today.

Today, like I have been doing for the past five years, I woke up as a wife, to a husband who worships the floor I walk on. I knew I was right when I choose him.  I also woke up a mother to two bubbly kids. Very rude pair if I must add. Samson and I are still wondering where we went wrong with those two- Samson and Lucy. Twins. Five years old. We just kept yelling and threatening without change. But still I adore them and they adore me.  On this day like every other day, my routine was pretty much the same. Prepare food for the family or they all starve since I hold the key to their survival. After breakfast I moved on to tackle those kids into the school bus like we do every day, I see Little Samson was becoming more mature but Lucy has resolved to be a brat.  I always blamed Samson for Lucy's attitude and then he blames me back and then we would quarrel. After tossing the children on the school bus, Samson and I would race off to work.  I am a psycholog...
